Why do a guy give a paper heart to girl?

There is a colleague of mine who I used to be good friends with. After some months, we did not talk nor gave each other any eye contact. This happened after I found out that he was dating a senior that all our department colleague dislike. I completely stopped talking with him because he is dating and if we stay close like before, it would affect his girlfriend. Today during a meeting, he threw a paper toward my direction and I picked to see what's inside and I found a paper heart. Why would he give a paper heart to me when we don't talk at all?
