One day, he smiles & give attention to me. Another day, he completely ignores me, what does it mean?

So there is this guy in my class, he is my crush, i feel like even he has a crush on me. But someday he smiles at me, gives me lots of attention, talks with me and the other day he completely ignores me.
what does that mean? this is so confusing!
is he playing hard-to-get? or not interested in me?
please help me out with your opinions!

He is either not interested, or have a huge crush on you. I know it because I have been in both situations. A guy who’s not interested may not notice your presence, and appears as if he is ignoring you. But if he has a crush on you, he would be under huge pressure to approach you. He could smile and talk to you one day when he has enough courage, and try to avoid you another day because he assumed you are not interested.

It can be very difficult to tell the difference.
