You're not as smart as you think you are and you're not as funny as you think you are? That's probably why you're confused lmao. You're probably are smart and funny but he's probably making it sound like you're highly intelligent and extremely funny due to the fact that he compliments your intelligence and sense of humor all the time. A guy I liked did this too. And I was thinking I want him to compliment my beauty. Why does he keep acting like I'm super smart and funny. But that's because he was too embarrassed to tell me I'm beautiful so he decided to still give me compliments that'll still let me know he thinks highly of me without getting embarrassed.

So, the obvious could be interest but the alternative could be out of respect, too. Perhaps he does not want to cause conflict and send the wrong signals/get you in trouble with your man if he saw you with him and he was laughing in public with you.

Realistically however, chances are is that he wants to see if you are free or not before proceeding.
