Why do guys go for a woman’s friends?

I and others have been in situations where a guy who was talking to us eventually stopped and started talking to our friends instead trying to start something up with them as well.
Why are guys attracted to girls’ friends and what should we do when a guy goes for our friend simply because they are our friend?

If I don't find a girl interesting after speaking with her I might see if her friend is interesting to me. It isn't as if I committed to the first girl just by talking with her.
