Why do men stare when they feel threatened or intimidated?

I’m 6’4 , heavily tatted and physically fit and I’ve noticed guys always staring at me or even trying to compete or assert themselves over me. This happens a lot at work and I often find myself having to control my temper. Why do guys act like this when intimidated or threatened? Is it a defense mechanism?
