I don’t know what to say back or to feel like he’s not interested…

He might just be nervous, or not very savvy socially. Or he may not be interested. It is hard to tell. It is meaningless to guess, why don’t you just find out. Tell him there is this piano concert (or whatever else going on) and if he would also like to check it out.
