How does a guy who is closed off to his emotions typically show a girl that he is interested?

Of course I want to get to know him better. This guy and I are just friend, we used to be super close before but I haven’t talked to him in a while now. He has been acting very different around me for example he looks at me a lot, avoids eye contact with me at all cost when I look at him, he can talk and joke with every one but with me he is so serious and tense. Whenever he looks at me, it is really serious and sad. I have been observing the way he looks at me for a while now. It just becomes more and more tense like he is looking through my souls. Sometimes it makes me feel a little bit shy because he keeps looking at me for no reason. Can it just happens out of the blue.
