Why would a guy tell a female he can't be her friend anymore?

Could be a number of reasons. The ones that come to my mind are he’s in a relationship with a controlling person who doesn’t want him having friends of the opposite sex, he has feelings for her that she doesn’t share and he can’t handle only being friends, or he’s just simply lost interest in her.
But if you are the female friend in question, I suggest asking him directly and getting to the bottom of it.

He was probably trying to get her attention for a while and she was missing it. Some guys will quit before being direct about wanting to be lore than friends. Not sure why some play that game, it’s what woman usually do. Most men aren’t like that.
