Why did this guy hug me?

hi. so uhm. ya.
i go to a school where they dont speak English because me and my family moved. so, basically a foreign school.
everyone is particulary close with me, they try to interact with me in class, but never outside of our classroom.
specifically, i was waiting outside of our class because it was locked. the guy who sits infront of me, opened his arms and asked for a hug. to me this was very weird because i never really interacted with anyone like that? especially not guys
obviously, because i dont speak the language very fluently, is this is his way of greeting me? as i could tell he doesn't do it to anyone else. and i kinda like him,. help idfk
