I personally find it much easier to talk to someone if we're both doing something together. Playing a game, eating dinner, watching a movie, waking around a museum...

Some people feel that activities distract or get in the way -- how are you supposed to hold a conversation if you aren't even looking at each other? -- but I find that anything that helps fill dead air allows conversation to flow more naturally, instead of being broken up by long, awkward pauses when nobody knows what to say.

Plus, activities give you something that is immediately relevant to both of you if you don't know what else to talk about. "Did you see that X? That reminds me of Y, but I've always liked Z better. How do you feel about it?"

Depends on what he likes. That could be games, books or whatever he's interested in.
