Why would you be afraid? Does he mean so much to you or is he just a normal acquaintance?

Next time you meet him, which, according to your text, should be tomorrow, then simply say that you did see him too late yesterday and you did not greet him. No apologies necessary as this is not something that anyone should be upset about.

My fear is that if you stop to tell him your story, he will start getting into a longer conversation and that is not really what you want, is it now?

Simply say while passing him the usual way

"sorry, I only realized once I passed you that I did not greet you yesterday". Then move away and all should be good. No need to overthink this little mishap.
