Wait until later in the day and ask him if he needs space in mornings or if he was just having a bad one this time. A lot of people need time to process and wake up before being in a mindset to focus on feelings of others being triggered by silent reactions. He might have a lot going on in his head, or a busy day ahead and focusing on shutting it out for a few min. It's rude without explaining this if this is his case, sure. But some people literally need to be told they are being rude and clear the air both sides.
