Guys who open doors and lower their faces, why do you do this?

I'm not against it. Just that I usually just see this with older men, (near their 60's). Yet, lately I've noticed some younger men also are doing it at my university. Out of curiosity, for men who do this what's the motivation behind? Is it courtesy, basic manners, or do you instinctively do it?

In today's world as a man, it does seem as though you cannot hold the door for a lady without them thinking some type of dirty old man. I am 46 and I do this sometimes... I make eye contact and if they do not smile or say thank you or present themselves a nice person, I just look away without saying a word.

If it bothers, you then smile at them and say thank you. Take the time to acknowledge them as a person.

I was raised to open/hold doors for people, but I've gotten a lot of dirty looks from women when I do. I hadn't really thought about it until this question, but I do think I probably look down or away so I don't get a dirty look, or at least I don't see it. I don't want to stop holding doors because I think it's the polite thing to do, but I don't want to get cynical about it so I'd rather just not know if they look at me sideways. What I don't know won't hurt me, lol

A mix of all 3, probably. It's a small, effortless gesture of courtesy and respect.

I don’t lower my head, but I do open doors for both men and women. Courtesy, basic manners, and instinctive. All three. I enjoy being a gentleman.
