If a relationship comes out of it you want it to be a natural relationship based on natural unmasked, personalitys, and reactions. Establishing a relationship with some one cause decided around a fake personalty or concern over frivolous things is a recipe for disaster.

It's supposed to be a more comfortable seating arrangement that decreases the chance of the woman feeling cornered, or whatever else. There's something rather aggressive or even adversarial about sitting directly across from someone.

Granted, I think early dates, when you are mostly talking, makes more sense to sit across from each other, but once you've been dating a while, it's not uncommon to prioritize proximity and access to each other. My girls have often wanted to hold hands, or lean against me and relax, especially if it was cold outside. You can't do that sitting across from each other.
