You are assuming he feels a certain based on your perception, which could easily be wrong.
He may have some trust issues he needs to work through.

Fear of re experiencing past traumas. Unresolved traumas direct people's lives. In this case as soon as he becomes intimate or is about to do so with someone his brain goes into defensive mode to avoid any potential hurt.
