Why would my boyfriend do this?

So I’ve (27F) been dating my boyfriend (28M) for 5 months now and things are great. When we first started seeing each other he was a real commitment phobe and that has seemed to ease up.
By commitment phobe I mean at the beginning he said he saw our relationship only being temporary and not long term.

since then, things have been a lot smoother and I definitley feel us growing closer and strengthening the relationship.

the other day we were talking about a friend getting married and we both agreed her ring was not the best looking, so he pulls up a jewelry website and shows me the rings he would pick. “This is what I’d get you. Or someone. I probably won’t buy anyone a ring”

it stung, but then it left me confused. Why would he even show me rings in the first place and why even say what he said. He could’ve just said he likes the looks of these ones better.

I obviously don’t want to ask him about it given his issues with commitment, so here I am lol.

It means he got scared of freaking you out , he's not openly talking about marrying someone else

He’s done this a couple times over the course of our relationship, saying something about the future and including me in it and then he freaks out and back tracks

I hope so! I’m not ready for any type of lifelong commitment right now anyway but I want a future with him in it, so I hope all in all this is a step in the right direction for us
