If I don’t know someone I don’t really contact them via social media unless I have to for some reason.

Either they are intimidated by the way the feel about you or just you in general. Less confident people can sometimes feel anxious when trying to approach someone they perceive as beautiful or sexy.

On the other hand it could be that these days younger men and women find it easier to use a phone or tech device to be an inflated version of themselves when reality can be very different.
