Why some guys give up on dating so fast?

I have an older brother in early 20s. Like ten months ago he got rejected by a girl he was dating for some time. Things were looking well for them but then she suddenly changed her mind. He was really hurt. He want to stay out of dating. He got really bitter towards it. Now there is one girl who likes him. She is pretty and sweet. But he doesn't want to even hear about that. Everyone tells him to give it a shot but he refuses. He says why he would do it to himself again, he likes himself to do it again and that he is not dating material.

You know it's like investing on someone emotionally so much and suddenly the other person says that "oh i think it's not going well , we should break up ". It would be a shock to that person and it can take longer time might be so long that person would really give up on dating.
