I like him but not his job?

I like this guy. We have talked a lot. I like him but not his job. He has a degree in engineering but does not work in the field. He works as a cashier at a store! He lives with his mom. He is 29 years old. I am working as an engineer and have my own place. This guy is really nice but I am not sure. Can I ask him why he don't work within his field? Is it wrong of me to like ask why?

It may be better to ask about what he'd like to be doing or how he ended up being cashier, rather than why he isn't doing something.

Lets see there are probably several reasons he doesn't work as an engineer. The most likely reason is he probably can't find a job in the field. Considering now companies are looking to hire more women in the stem fields just so they get a good dei rating. It doesn't matter if a man is more qualified for the job they will hire a woman before a man.
