We flirt together a lot. Recently he’s made a few jokes about “annoying me”. He said something about preferring to sit at smaller tables, so I said “well why don’t you move to a smaller table”, to which he said “I can’t annoy you from a distance”.

At break he’s also purposely sitting diagonally opposite me which he knows annoys me. When I pulled him up on it, he said “I like annoying you, it’s entertainment”.

This morning he was talking about playing rugby at the weekend and I said that I’d come along to one of his matches because I’d be intrigued to watch him play. I looked at him and I saw him smiling after I said that. He casually suggested that he is playing this Saturday.

There's clearly some interest. The important questions now are: how MUCH, and for WHAT? Remember that men can be "interested" in casual sex or they can be interested in a relationship, but those are two very different things, and "interest" should always be assumed to be ONLY casual sex UNTIL proven otherwise. Never, EVER assume "interest" means "relationship interest", because relationship interest ALWAYS has to be proven with words and behavior over a span of time, and "casual sex" interest is far more common than "relationship interest."

It's also important (IF you are looking for a relationship) to BE "relationship material", because if a particular guy doesn't think that you are, based on your history and your current behavior/attitude, then he'll often be happy to use you as "recreational use only." IF you want a relationship, then it's critical that you set boundaries and expectations early on that you are only interested in relationships - and you need to have a history of such. It's very easy to get disqualified from "relationship material" and virtually impossible to get promoted.
