How close are yoj? It may have been a random question, or maybe something he is experiencing and wants to know if anyone else has experienced it too, maybe for advice on whether or not to do it. He asked in the past tense, so it tends to be a reflective enquiery when you do that. 'Have you ever tried lasagne?' for example. Could be innoculous like that. Seeking an opinion on trying something new. On the other hand he could very well be fishing to see how you feel about them. Are you close friends? Can you talk about anything openly?
