It's tough man, I don't know the full details but it does sound sketchy what your old boss and company are saying about you. On the one hand, one lawyer telling you there's no case doesn't mean for sure there isn't. Maybe get a second opinion from another lawyer? Explain everything that happened and see what they think.
It can't hurt to consult with someone else, even if you don't hire them at least you'll have more info to consider. And if the new lawyer thinks you do have a case then maybe it would be worth pursuing. The $210 is a lot but could be worth it to stand up for yourself, you know? At minimum maybe the new lawyer can send your old boss/company a letter to stop the bad references. Worth looking into more I say. Don't just take one person's word for it.
Did the bad references include factually false statements, as opposed to opinions? Are you sure there was no investigation? How do you know?
Not saying you are wrong, just trying to see if you can prove some form of libel
