Latin merely refers to people who speak a Latin language like Spanish, Portuguese or Italian. There are no "Latin" people.
Hispanic refers to people who speak Spanish or have Spanish ancestry.
Even if you have a Latin accent, I have no idea why people would assume that you are from South America. Why not Mexico or Central America?
Both terms encompass roughly the same geographical areas, but the term 'Latin' is also used to describe the people of Hispanic descent.
