Why did this guy voluntarily wingman me for a girl that he is also interested in?

Maybe he actually tried to downplay you a little, so he can get her attention focused more on him.

I’ve wingmaned many times its never been to anybody I personally like though. As for why well one it’s fun (for me at least) that’s about it also it’s always interesting to watch how he or she plays it out once I’m done with my part
