Marriage is a legal contract under the state.

All assets and alimony, division of assets, child custody, child support are up to the courts if things end.

Courts regularly automatically give women child custody and make the man pay child support instead of 50/50 custody being the status quo. Adult women are often paid huge sums and ongoing alimony for years.

Kevin Costner, the actor is in the news right now in a testy divorce. He was just ordered to pay around 150,000 A MONTH in child support.

A court deems is just to pay 1,800,000, that's right MILLION dollars a year to take care of a kid. Some clothes, keep food in the fridge, a few doctors appointments...1.8 MILLION DOLLARS.

Why? Because he got MARRIED. I'm pretty sure not one person has ever paid this woman one penny to see a movie she was in.

I've paid, to see Kevin Costner in Dances with Wolves, Man of Steel, Waterworld, Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, plus a ton of other movies.

If the divorce laws weren't what they were then maybe more men would marry. Plus women put out so easy now. Why marry, she isn't making you marry her before she'll have sex, almost all women will put out by date 3. No women are virtuous and traditional anymore. All women get offended at gender roles, they don't NEED men (even though cars are repaired by men, buildings and houses are built by men, roads, bridges, overpasses, tunnels, food is grown by men, transported by men, breakthroughs and innovation is done by men, medicine, science, technology is done by men, the power and electrical grid is done by men, energy is harvested from the earth by men, if something breaks down, men are the mechanics, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, installers, maintenance workers.

So women are not sexually conservative any more. If you marry you take on ALL the financial risk and responsibility to be a woman's 20th lover, child custody laws, childcare laws, divorce laws favor women and hurt men. No fault divorce went away so now a woman can cheat and then hit the lottery in the divorce.

This contract sucks.

That's why. If women were still traditional, feminine, made guys wait and saved themselves, if divorce laws were fair, if divorces were harder to get and at fault divorces were still a thing... etc. more men would probably be up for marrying.

Marriage only adds legal and financial obligations and complications on a man. It is easier to hold onto a man with the marriage contract than hold onto a woman, as she generally has less to lose if the relationship ends. After all, 70% of divorces are filed by women.

If a woman wants a legal contract, she needs to have a clear understanding what her purposes are and how that might impact her partner... and clearly share that perspective with her partner. It needs to be more than outside pressure to follow the norm. Ask yourself what you bring to the relationship rather than focus on what you feel entitled to receive from the relationship. Make sure the guy sees value that will continue over time, not just during the honeymoon phase. Common bait and switch practices are making guys gun shy. Though girls tend to prioritize words, guys tend to prioritize actions, so make sure your words and actions mesh. Make sure he always feels safe with you. A marriage contract does not entitle a woman to accuse, blame, criticize, demand, rationalize, yell and tell others what they should or shouldn't do.

Because marriage is a real commitment with real consequences when broken, and a lot of people don't like that.

Because when it comes to marriage, men have a lot more to lose in a divorce. Custody of a kid favors the mother more, same goes for division of assets unless certain states allow a spouse to go for everything depending on credibility of presumed damages done to the party.

A man who has a kid with a woman may pay child support, but he won't have to worry about losing important things like his house, his car, part of his 401k, etc. That is why you may see couples become partners, but not married and have kids. It is less of a headache to involve the government and courts into the sacrament of marriage over staying unbound and a mutual agreement in place instead.

It is easier to have a relationship to include kids, sex, etc, that can dissolve over a falling out or mutual agreement rather than being bound with someone over a contract.

Marriage, at least where I live, is a contract that can be broken at will without penalty. In fact the person breaking the vows will still be awarded half, plus spousal support if the non-adulterer makes more. Betting half plus future earnings that the other person won't have a change of mind seems like a sucker's bet to me.
