It's the traditional way. Even Turkish guys living in the West will sometimes resort to it, especially when they are fed up with Western dating.
However, you would first "promise" the two people to each other. Some time later they get engaged and only the third step is marriage.
What is your relation to this guy? It is a bit disappointing if he just breaks up friendships with women now. On the other hand, it could irritate his fiancée if he has single women as friends.
Of course, he should never just have blocked you.
