Why would a guy say his ex was a pearl does he still love her?

You should be happy, as it is unlikely he will "throw you under a bus" if it does not work out between you.

He's acknowledging she was a good person. Of course he has love for her. Doesn't mean he's in love. She's an ex for a reason. Didn't work out on some or several levels. Doesn't mean he has to hate her.

That's a green flag to me. Sounds like he's acknowledging that she was a good woman. Better than him just trash talking her or saying she was nuts.
