Is it normal he’s still in love with his ex from 5 years ago despite being a bad boyfriend to her?

So I recently cut ties with a guy I was really interested in..
the one that talked shit about me who’s shitty friend tried to stir drama.
I found out he did say he was still in love with his ex who he dated for 5 years... they haven’t spoken since 2016... he never compared me to her or stated he wanted to have her in the way that his friend claims he did he did say he thought maybe one day he can get back with her.
she was his “one that got away”
I wasn’t jealous, as that was his high school sweet heart, they grew up together and spent 5 years dating, he taken her virginity and he hasn’t been in a relationship since!
however I came to find out that he..
cheated on her countless times with different girls, stole her anxiety meds from her to sell them, physically hurt her, put her in dangerous situations multiple times!

she’s been with a new man for 5 years now and he’s still hung up on her! I spoken to the girl and I’m thankful I did or else I wouldn’t have found out how awful he was! He reluctantly admitted to everything she said being true !
... he apparently still thinks he can get back with her!

I think it’s completely normal. My ex from 2014, if I messaged him right now, he would answer in a heart best and he screwed me over very badly. I think when you date someone in developing years, you are more likely to keep an attachment to them.

This makes sense as my friend is like that with the person she dated when she was 15! And she’s now 20. I thought of it as uncommon as mostly everyone else I know seem to be well over their high school sweethearts or they’re civil with them for the sake of them having shared a lot of memories but that’s it.. I was disappointed to hear he still loves her because let’s face it the heart wants what it wants you can’t change memories.. only try make new ones with the person & hope it’s enough for them to move on but with that being said I cut my loses in the end after hearing how he treated her.

I agree, although I do think his false sense of reality that he can get her back is weird. There’s times where you need to understand you screwed up, and can’t go back on it. And good for you! He still sounds like he’s not really a good guy.
