Why would a guy make up that he has a girlfriend?

A friend asked me out and I said no I wasn’t looking for a relationship at the moment as life is good being single and he then out of nowhere said he had a girlfriend..

weve been chatting since and he never ever mentions her ever and so I thought I’d ask about whether he was still seeing her and his answer was vague and he said ‘oh it won’t affect our friendship I’m wary now ‘

I’m not sure I believe she exists …. so if she doesn’t then why lie?

Sounds like since he received a "rejection from you" he decided to "play his card", by saying he has a girlfriend, but siunds Bogus, as he gave you the "girlfriend Card" too soon. He thought this way: if she didn't want me, then when she will ask me out i'll tell her that i have a girlfriend, just for her to "see" how it feels that "she lost the oportunity" to be with me! 🤷‍♂️.
But his "plan" kinda Backfired on him! 🤣🤣🤣

He is afraid of... take your pick... It's a way to "bail out" of the failure of the attempt to go on a date. That way, he keeps you as a friend. So afraid of... being alone? A real man would take it on the chin and be ok with it. Appears, he wasn't.

May depend how he said that, can change the answer. Context is relevant, not just words.

Because you turned him down and killed his ego , he feels you dont like him like he liked you , so he is going. to keep walls up by saying he has a girlfriend to try to make you jealous that you didn't go for him the first time around. So mynadvice. to you is. to just move on

Because it gives him cover and plausible deniability. If he has a girlfriend, the presence of a woman in his life is likely to make you more comfortable around him, and it also gives him an excuse to claim that he wasn't asking you out romantically because he is already in a relationship.

I would assume he already feels bad about being rejected so he probably made that up so that he won’t feel as bad or look as bad in front of you. Could be a coping mechanism.

Just interested and also slightly disappointed with him ad I thought he sss one of the good guys. He’s either lying or not respecting his girlfriend by attempting to play away. I’m almost hoping he is lying as I don’t want my opinion to change for the even worse
