Do guys pretend like they have a girlfriend even though they don't have?

For any reason, do they lie about that? What could be the reasons? (for instance, to make jealous the girl they like or be defensive against a rejection?)

A lot of people tell a white lie about being in a relationship if they want to reject someone without making that person feel bad... Now if they invent a fake girlfriend on a long-term basis, they're probably depressed and lonely.

I've never heard of that happening really, I wouldn't lie about having a girlfriend because then the girl of interest would just think I'm taken and that's it
