Why would a guy be mean to a girl he likes?

it's a thing that happens especially in kids when a guy sees a girl he likes the fight or flight response kicks in and the urge to fight is stronger so they fight/bully/pick-on the one they like. This isn't ideal for kids as the bullying can harm the other without the bully knowing. If the flight urge is stronger then the kid would more run away from the one they like and watch from a distance, as they get confidence to approach them they can end up looking or acting creepy and weird so both sides are a loss and need some aid

Immaturity, or simply a lack of self-confidence. That kind of thing also happens a lot with women, where the woman decides that she can't accept that you love her because she doesn't love herself.

I imagine that guys do a similar sort of thing.

When my uncle was a kid there was a girl in the neighborhood that he liked. He used to hide behind a tree and throw rocks at her. Maybe it is like that.
