Weird signs? Opinions?

recently got in touch with a guy I had a fling with back in high school! Well things started as friends we talked everyday for 4 months and slowly escalated when he brought up feelings…he said how he never could stop thinking of me, how he wished he could go back, i never left his mind, dreams of me, thought about me when he talked to other girls, he straight up wrote a letter for me. He literally said he wanted me and has felt these feelings forever.(I blocked him for 5 years..) I told him I felt the same after many years of thinking about him as well. 2 days later he tells me he didn’t mean any of that he was just drunk and he loves his girlfriend. (Which mind you I asked about her before he brought up feelings, always changed subject.) why the mix signals? He is one day telling me how he is dreaming about me then the next day he saying he didn’t mean it. Was I played? Is this normal? Did this man ever have things feelings?
