Guys, What would make you protective over a woman you aren't in a relationship with?

So like the question said what would make you protective over a woman you aren't in a relationship with? Im not talking about female relatives either. I've heard many men say "you can't be friends with women" so if you're protective of someone there must be another reason.

Also I'm talking about actual protective like "hey, I'm keeping her from getting stabbed" or that guy is being a jerk to her I'm stepping in.

Men generally have a natural instinct to be protective of women. But there has been so much rhetoric from women in recent decades about not needed men, men being unnecessary or even useless, most men have been put off of it and feel like fine, if you don't need me I'm not going to put myself at risk to protect you.

For me, there are always a few exceptions. Tt just depends on my perception of the woman and the situation.
