Guy's Behavior

Confused on this guy’s behavior?

In one of my classes, I am seat mates with a guy. He rarely talks to me and seems pretty chill around me for the most part. That is until he asks me a question about our work. I look him in the eye when he asks me questions (out of respect), but he ends up getting all weird and avoiding eye contact. I can’t tell if it is just nervousness. But when his friends come over to our spot, he starts joking with them, but also starts teasing and interacting with me? Other times we just mostly ignore each other in the halls, but when it’s just me and him in the halls (which happens often because out schedules are similar), he adjusts his hair around me, fluffing it up. He doesn’t say anything or indicate anything other than that. I’m wondering if what he does is a nervous habit, or if he’s interested. I’ve noticed him interact with other girls in the hallways, but he’s always just super awkward around me. What could this mean?
