Was I the backup plan?

My college crush found out I liked him in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. Due to the transition to online lectures we lost sight of each other. In 2021 befriended a girl who was his best friends room mate. In 2022 when he saw me on campus again he was staring at me like crazy and talked about me to his friend who tried to ship us. When he saw me entering the room he would have this surprised look and his mouth slightly open. I’m pretty sure he was at least a little interested. However due to shyness nothing ever happened between us. In 2023 I found out my crush and his female friend became a couple. Now I’m wondering: if he knew her for about a year when he started flirting with me, was I just a back up in case they would not work out?

I wouldn’t say you were the backup plan. I think the other girl might’ve flirted with him a little more directly than you and got his attention more so. Or she was more his type than you. Which does indeed happen

It took you 2-4 years at this point tho. He could’ve found you cute but because of the distancing it could cause him to not be as interested in you and she got his attention more after the pandemic. You’d have to ask him what happened
