Online culture in general is disastrous to the perception of men but even before the internet it wasn’t always a positive view. The difference is online anonymity is a very powerful shield to be used against real-world consequences, allowing one to release their empathy entirely so a lot of people - men especially - can come off as selfish, cruel, egotistical while also seeing women in objectifying ways and disparaging them when they don’t play along. So with this added in, it makes it appear that a lot of men’s truest selves in anonymous forms are just unlikable people at best, wife beaters at worst, and that just further drags down the image someone who’s not a man can have of men.
