What does it mean when a girl talks about her ex every now and then?

as the title asks. what does this mean? would this woman still have feelings for her ex? by her talking about him, would this mean that she has set a standard of what she is looking for, off of him?

the background to this, is that I have been friends with this woman for a little while. and though I have interest in her, I'm hesitant of making my feelings available because I'm not sure if I'm even her "type" at all. nor do I think she sees me as more than a friend. at my age, becoming friends is the norm as jumping into things isn't plausible.

I have been with my boyfriend for nearly two years now, and I occasionally mention things about my ex who I was with for about a year and a half.

I guess it depends on how she's talking about him. I started dating my ex when I was sixteen, and we broke up when I was 18 - he was a part of my life for a big part of high school. It's kinda impossible to talk about memories I have from high school that he's not in. I'm not reflecting on how much I loved him or how much I miss him or how he was the perfect man - if that was the case, I would still be with him.

Stop thinking so hard. The only way you'll ever find out if you two can work is if you put yourself out there a little. Ask her on a date or something. A real date - not just two friends hanging out. Stop worrying so much about whether you're her "type" or not. Personally, I go for a WIDE variety of guys. You can't change what "type" you are, but you can make sure that you are kind and funny and respectful. That means a whole lot more. If you are genuinely interested in seeing where things may go with her, you have to do something to make it happen. It's scary to go out on the limb, but you might be very surprised. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Usually, just cause a girl talks about her ex doesn't mean she's still into him. I still talk about mine and I have no feelings for them. Its just that each ex was still a part of her life and things happened during that time. Its a part of her even if she no longer has feelings for him. Some things she talks about might be good things that happened and others may not be. But every person we meet and get to know leaves some sort of imprint on our lives. It is usually not able to be washed completely away like a footprint in the sand, but rather it is like a name carved in a gravestone. It is always there but overtime, things fade. So I wouldn't worry about her ex. Good luck!

I don't see it as a big deal. He was a part of her life, therefore is bound to talk about him at some point and time. My mom was married to my dad for 20 years, and even to this day, she'll still bring up old exes in relation to the topic we're talking about. ("Oh, when I was dating so and so, this and that happened, and then blah blah, whatever the story is.")

Um ... it means she had a life before today. What do you want her to do, pretend the past never happened? Her ex was a significant person in her life at one time. I'd find it creepy if she never talked about her ex(es). If it means anything, it just means she's normal. Sounds to me like you're just looking for ways to rationalize you lacking the courage to let her know you're interested.

It happens. I've been with my boyfriend for 2 years and still talk about my exes, he gets mad about it but that's the only way I can explain the way I am. I would never EVER get back with any of my exes also.

I talk a lot about my ex and I have no feelings for him. It's just to prevent others from making my mistakes or just to vent because I've been hurt. So, no, she doesn't necessarily have feelings for him.

If she talks about him to you she probably does still have feelings for him and also knows a little that you like her. But that doesn't mean you guys can never get together.
