I've known this man off and on for the past 2 years.

I'm back in town and got the chance to see him the other day at an event and when we saw each other he reached out his hand for me to shake and he turned it into a hug. After we got done talking, I went to go shake his hand and as we were doing this some people came to walk around us and we moved to the side without letting go for about 5 seconds.

I've had the biggest crush on him for about 2 years but he's about double my age, so never made a move, but after this happened the other day, I'm wondering if I should ask him out for breakfast when I get back into town next month.

Handshakes or hugs doesn't really mean anything, even if they last longer, it's a way to express if someone missed someone for a longer time. Unless age is a thing for you and your into caring what others have of an opinion, then yes contact him for breakfast and enjoy it. Your both mature adults and at least grab a bite with your crush, share jokes and let those butterflies in your tummy enjoy its time.
