What are the differences between alpha, beta and sigma males?

The terms come from the world of software; "alpha" refers to a male who's in an incomplete state- his core functionality may be present, but a LOT of work needs to be done to make him market-ready; "beta" refers to males that are feature-complete, but lacking polish and refinement; and "sigma" refers to GI Joe dolls that are eight inches tall and have more articulation than the older models.

Obviously, none of that is true, but the truth is even stupider.

Dave Mech is a biologist who specializes in studying wolves, and back in the 60's and 70's, published some seminal research into wolf societies- that turned out to be completely wrong. He himself admits this, and was doing work that corrected his earlier mistakes as far back as the mid-80s, but no one listens; once a stupid idea gets grasped by the public, they are VERY reluctant to let go.
