Why would a guy say you and him are a couple but he never asked you out?

It depends on the context -- and the guy. I had a guy friend who was very clearly struggling with confidence and anxiety issues... he was always very awkward, but he was a nice person, but he'd always ask my opinion about stuff -- clothing, barber shop, you name it. I didn't think anything of it because I was just answering a question for a friend, you know?

One evening I rushed from work to an evening church event and went in to greet the priest (a very dear family friend)... A bunch of my close friends were there, and so was this guy, who immediately announces, "Look who i brought with me... my girlfriend."

Now... you could have knocked me over with a feather when I heard that. I froze mid-smile and looked at the priest -- like "HELP! SOS!" and he looked at the guy then back at me... And I hugged the priest, told him I was feeling tired from work and just went home.

Why am I telling you this... It might not be the same instance in your case -- and @spartan55 is right that you should ask your friend what's going on -- but in the story I just shared I know the guy was just anxious and feeling awkward, that he didn't feel like he'd fit in on his own and I was basically his human security blanket. But what he said was a complete fabrication, and I felt I had two choices... (1) remove myself and just let his thoughts cool off for a while by easing back on any contact, or (2) making a big public spectacle that would've made him look bad... (Door #1 for me.)

If you don't want to encourage the guy... and don't want to risk any more misunderstandings on his part, I suggest possibly backing off... or having an honest chat with him and making sure you shut down any unwanted titles, etc.

Because he is just assuming you both are , which is sadly dumb on his part , if he never asked you to be his girlfriend? than he is a dumbass to just assume you are. Just be upfront with him and tell him you weren’t aware you were both official , whoops lol
