Guys, Why would a man want to compare himself to other guys in my life?

See title. More details? We all work together, but he constantly brings up other guys that I tend to be close with at work. It's like he's trying to find out who my favorite guy at work is? I brought up a guy one other time 6 months ago, and he still randomly asks about it.

Hmm that is kinda weird that he keeps bringing up other guys and seems to want to compare himself to them. As a guy, I can think of a few possible reasons he might be doing that:

- He could be insecure and wants to make sure he's your number one guy over the others. Some dudes get competitive even in non-romantic situations.

- He might actually be interested in you and is trying to gauge how you feel about the other dudes to see if he has a chance. Could be a weird awkward way of him feeling you out.

- Jealousy maybe if he has a thing for you but isn't sure where you both stand. Bringing them up is a way to subtly find out if you're single or available.

- Wants to assert his dominance as alpha male. Yeah it's dumb but some guys are territorial even platonically about female friends at work.

It is pretty annoying that he keeps harping on that one guy from so long ago though. I'd just be straight up with him like "why are you so hung up on comparing to other dudes, it's weirding me out." Maybe he'll realize he needs to chill if you call him on it directly. Guys can be dense sometimes!
