Why do some men walk ahead of their girlfriends?

With my ex he would always walk by my side, I’m a fast walker even though I have shorter legs and he was a slow walker. I had to match his speed but he would always try to stick by my side. With my current man tho, he’s also a fast walker with longer legs and stride, I can’t keep up with him unless I’m literally jogging. So most of the time he ends up just walking ahead of me while I trail behind him. I do feel kinda left behind sometimes.

But is this common for guys to be walking ahead of their girl? I’ve seen it a lot with married couples mostly, I can kinda see the dynamic that the man is asserting that he is the “leader”. My boyfriend is also the dominant one in the relationship, is this why he always has to walk ahead of me?

Some men do this because they feel like being in a "blocking position" if trouble is coming is the best place to be. I, however, disagree. I normally walk half a step BEHIND my girl, so that I can see threats coming from about 260 degrees centered straight ahead, and I routinely check behind me to cover the rest, but from this location, I'm best positioned for surprises. Now, if I see that we're approaching a sketchy situation, I may move up in front of her, but at that point, I'm responding to an identified threat, and not just "on watch."

Often, threats will come from your sides or behind you, so walking ahead of her is in my opinion not the right choice, unless there are several men there to protect the women, at which point you have some in front and some behind.

That makes sense, I personally also thought that the best position to stay “on watch” would probably be from few steps behind. I also feel like some men just walk really fast so their partners get left behind, but in those cases it just makes it seem like they don’t really care enough about their partner to match their pace.

because narrow sidewalk so for people walking opposite direction

That makes sense in that particular scenario. But I’m referring to instances where that’s not the case, say you’re walking at the mall or at the park where the road is wide enough for 4-5 people to be walking side by side.

My girlfriend gets all self conscious when I walk behind her because she's recently gone on the pill and her ass has exploded, she know I'm checking out that fat ass.
