Most guys want sex, so if he's being called sexy then the ball is quickly rolling in the right direction he wants it to go, you know? Anytime a woman says sexy instead of cute or handsome, I mean, come on. That's a bit more rare than the other 2.

Handsome is my favorite. Cute is alright but if it gets too much it feels weird, like you're "adorable" rather than sexy, which is also a nice thing to hear.
