Why do guys pick up girls?

My boyfriend ask all the time if he can pick me up. Even when he hurt his leg some he still wanted to. I told him no and he pouted but it was for his own good so his leg can get better. Someone please tell me why guys like picking up their girls it confuses me. Is it like to show off strength or what?
