I don’t think so. He’s normal for having these feelings it’s just maybe not meant to be. Be super kind and maybe talk to him. Tell him you think he’s a great guy and you can tell he’s into you. But you don’t feel the same way. This immediately gives him closure and he won’t waste his time and can hopefully find someone into him.

What you can also do is try to set him up with someone. People who say “keep him as a backup” don’t ever do that. It’s better to be alone then choose someone you’re not happy with.

You should pursue who you’re into and whose genuinely into you. Don’t play those games.

Keep him as a backup for a while, defy the self appointed moral arbiters and don't feel the guilt that others want to saddle you with. I mean, tell him you're not romantically inclined towards him, but keep him around, just the same. If he can handle it, you might have found yourself a new platonic friend.
