Why can't he let me go if he doesn't want anything serious?

I have something going on with a close male friend. We kissed like 3 times in one year, and often slept side by side and cuddled when we had a sleepover with our friendgroup. It started when we had a 3h talk on the street almost 1yr ago. He has a high bodycount and one ex from when he was 15/16 and he also said that he truly loved her. I am an absolute virgin so this were all my first experiences. But from the beginning it was clear that I would never sleep with him and he also never tried. He also always told me it's not easy and he doesn't know what he wants from me and that I'm the prettiest girl he knows. So now he became really mean suddenly, since 6 months and I started to distance myself because I also got the feeling he wasn‘t over his ex at all. Yesterday we saw eachother again and he asked me whats wrong. It kinda caught be off guard so I said I don't wanna talk about it rn when others are around. He apologized but I was not in the right state for this conversation. He drove me home with 2 other friends and suddenly called me 30min later and texted me he wanted to talk about it. Then he was infront of my window on the street at 4 in the morning but I sent him home because it was all too much for me. We agreed to have the conversation on a birthday party soon. Well this morning I found a rose in front of my door and I'm going insane. I don't get this guy and I also don't get what he wants from me when he can't commit and could never sleep with me. This stuff goes on for a year now and I just can't understand it. Any advice?
