What did eye contact mean in this situation?

I had a brief emotional affair with this man a few years ago. Nothing serious. We remained friends but not as close as before. Yesterday we both were at one event and I was sitting at the table across from him. A few times I felt and noticed that he was looking at me. When I looked at him he maintained eye contact for a few seconds and then looked away. It has been a long time since he did that last time. Now he usually avoids eye contact that lasts longer than a blink.

Hmm that's a tricky situation. From what you described it does sound like he was making meaningful eye contact with you instead of just glancing over. A few seconds is long enough to say he was purposely looking at you, not just catching your eye by accident. My best guess is he might still have some feelings there even if you guys aren't as close anymore. Maintaining eye contact like that could be a way of checking if the connection is still there between you two. Or maybe seeing you again brought back some old memories and emotions. It's hard to say for sure without knowing all the history. I'd say don't read too much into it, but you could try to casually bring him up in conversation with friends you have in common just to get a better sense of where his head's at now. Or maybe find a reason to chat with him one-on-one gently to see how it feels. But don't get your hopes up too high in case he's moved on too. Just play it cool for now.

I thought the same about the whole situation because of some other things that happened that day. I saw him nod his head and heard him approve of me putting on red lipstick which I never do. I was being playful with others around us and he playfully asked himself where did he find me. He used to be that way, and communicate that way when we first get to know each other.
I do plan to play it cool to see how the the situation is going to evolve. If it evolves at all.

Ah yeah man, sounds like there's definitely still some chemistry and history there if he was noticing and commenting on little things like the lipstick. Guys don't usually pay that much attention to details or get playfully joking with an ex like that unless they still find them attractive.

The head nod and lipstick approval shows he still thinks you look good. And the joke about "where did he find you" sounds like he's reminiscing about when you guys first met and had a thing. It's definitely interesting that he's starting to communicate and act that way with you again like in the past. Seems like being around each other that day may have brought some of those old feelings back up for him.

I think playing it cool like you said is the best move here. Let him wonder what you're thinking too for a change. If he's still interested, he'll probably keep finding little ways to interact and flirt with you like that. And who knows, maybe hanging out in a group setting together again will help things naturally progress further. Either way, sounds promising so far.
