Why is he nervous and reserved towards me around his family?

I realised my friend is a lot more reserved and shy and nervous when his parents are around. When they're not, he's comfortable giving me hugs and saying compliments. Why is this?

That is pretty normal to not go full on PDA around family. He likely doesn't want to make anyone else feel awkward watching you two hug and get all wishy washy over each other. I don't see that as a problem. Perhaps his parents are more the traditional types that don't do that sort of thing around other people. Could even be down to religion. Hard to say not knowing the guy or his family. I am only taking guesses as to why. If he is your friend then you should ask him because he is the only one that truly knows why he is like that around his parents. Surely if he is a good enough friend to hug you are close enough to have a conversation about this if it really bothers you to the point you make an account and post online about it.
