We do get more confident and know our value more. Girls 20-24 are at their peak of attractiveness. Physical attractiveness is an observable proxy for fertility so evolution rewarded men who responded to that.

It is really that men prefer women in the peak of fertility (20-24) and the age gap will increase as men age. It is not as if it is going down in absolute age.

In Europe, a man was about 40 when he could marry so large age gaps were institutionalized you could say with 18-24 yo women. At sea men didn't go to college and graduate as Captains. There was a long practical experiential learning and necessarily older.

It does so today and we can rely on future earnings. In the past we more had to have the money in the bank. I can see this in my own family tree.

I think there might be wishful thinking around female fertility peaking at 30. At 30 there is the start of a steep decline. I guess using words in a positive manner you could might say peak instead of the "last gasp".
if you are measuring fertility in terms of viable ova, this data sourced from American Society of Reproductive Medicine clarifies. There are a lot of similar charts you will find with google. I would use the word peak in the sense of being the highest value reached and that is 20-24.
