Why does he stare at me in class but is dry over text?

We have mutual friends so we see each other when we hang out but I’m really shy so we don’t talk much. In class he often stares at me and we make a lot of eye contact. He DM'd me once to ask about homework but it was very brief and dry. I tried to keep the conversation going by asking him for revision notes and he sent lots of pictures but didn’t say anything. I thanked him and told him to ask me if he ever needs anything but he just replied with "ok." I like him and he doesn’t know. What can I do? I am really really really shy. Why is he acting like that? I am 100% sure about the stares and the eye contacts. (We’re 18.)
